Our action men have pedal power

18th March 2013

Jonathon Boardley and Paul Thompson from the Old Bakery are getting on their bikes this summer to raise cash for good causes.

Paul, Network Controller, and colleague Jonathon, Taxi Coordinator, will take part in two charity rides through East Anglia…and Paul has also lined up a gruelling schedule of up to five other cycling events.

In August, the pair will join a 60-mile bike ride, pedalling along the scenic Suffolk coast and countryside.

Jonathon (pictured left) is raising money for St Elizabeth Hospice, which had cared for his grandfather at its day centre.

The pair will be donning their Lycra again on 29 September to tackle a 77-mile ride from Cambridge to Norwich.

Paul says: “The charity I am supporting is the Targeted Radiotherapy Appeal at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals (NNUH), which wants to update radiotherapy equipment and services.

“Currently, people requiring a certain type of radiotherapy have to go to Cambridge or further afield, at a time when they probably feel least capable of travelling.

“This more targeted radiotherapy, called brachytherapy, is particularly effective with breast and prostate cancers and I want to raise awareness of this campaign and funds towards the £600,000 required to achieve it.”

It was the Cambridge-Norwich ride which inspired Paul to support the radiotherapy appeal and he thought taking part in a series of events would be even better at increasing awareness and encouraging more people to get on their bikes.

First up is the Cambridge 100 on 1 April; then the 60-mile Tour of Tendring in Essex on 19 May; then the Norwich 100 on 1 June; the Essex County 60 on 16 June; and (depending on circumstances) the 77-mile Birmingham-Oxford ride on 7 July.

“Should anyone wish to join me for any or all of these rides, they would be very welcome,” adds Paul, who is a member of Iceni Velo and the York Tavern Cycling Club

“The more people raising money for this cause the better!”

He added: “Having had four members of my family suffer with varying forms of cancer, and experienced the untimely loss of family members taken by this disease – as have many people – I wanted to support something that can actively help to fight this most destructive disease.

“The professionalism, dedication and simple acts of kindness shown by all the staff at the NNUH during the times that I have had cause to be there have also helped me to do this.”
